Etsy photo size: 2000 pixels inside one megabyte

Etsy publishes two requirements that fight each other — at least 2000 pixels on both width and height, and files no larger than 1 MB. Meeting both means compressing deliberately rather than exporting at maximum quality, and that is what this page is about.

Your photos are processed on your own device and are never uploaded to a server.

High detail

Buyers pinch-zoom into texture and stitching, and the platform asks for large dimensions. Upload around 2000px — but watch the file size, because these platforms also want lean files.

2 sizes worth having

  • 2000 × 20001:1

Square. Etsy recommends at least 2000px on both width and height. Square survives Etsy's various crops best.

  • 2000 × 15004:3

Landscape. Etsy's search thumbnails are landscape, so a 4:3 cover previews closest to what shoppers actually see.

Two requirements that pull in opposite directions

Etsy wants a large photograph in a small file. Those are the two halves of the same dial, so the useful way to see the requirement is as a budget: the cap divided by the pixels Etsy asks for, which is how many bytes the encoder gets to spend on each megapixel of your photo.

Etsy

250 KB

per megapixel

1 MB across 4.0 MP. Tight enough that the quality setting is a decision rather than a formality.

eBay, for contrast

2.7 MB

per megapixel

7 MB across 2.6 MP — roughly 11 times more room for the same job.

This is why the usual advice fails on Etsy. “Export at maximum quality” puts a 2000 × 2000 photograph somewhere between 2 and 5 MB, which is two to five times over. “Compress it a lot” comes in at 300 KB and takes the weave of the fabric with it, on the one marketplace whose buyers are looking directly at the weave.

The answer is neither: resize to exactly the dimensions Etsy asks for, then find the highest quality that fits under 1 MB. That is a search, not a guess, and it is the whole reason the compressor here takes a target size instead of offering you a slider.

The order that works, in two passes

  1. 1.Resize to 2000 × 2000. The resizer above is already set to it, and it takes a target file size too — so for most photographs one pass does both jobs and you can stop here.
  2. 2.Compress to just under 1 MB if anything came out over. The compressor keeps your dimensions exactly and solves for the quality — and it tells you which quality it settled on, so you can see how much room the photograph had.

What not to do is resize down to make the file smaller. Below 2000px you are trading away the zoom quality Etsy asked for in the first place, and on handmade and vintage listings the zoom is where the sale happens.

The thumbnail crop nobody plans for

Your first photo does two entirely different jobs on Etsy. On the listing page it is a large square a shopper can zoom into. In search results it is a landscape thumbnail, cropped from the same file — and that is the version competing against a whole page of other shops.

On the listing

Square · 2000 × 2000

Shown large, zoomable, and the reason for the pixel requirement. Square is also the shape that survives Etsy's other crops with the least damage.

In search

Landscape · roughly 4:3

A square photo loses about a quarter of its height here, taken off the top and bottom. Anything important near an edge — a handle, a lid, a signature — can simply vanish from the view that earns the click.

Two ways to handle it

The simple one: keep the subject centred with room above and below, and the landscape crop takes background rather than product. The deliberate one: prepare your first photo at 2000 × 1500 using the landscape preset, so what you see is what search shows, and let the square versions carry the rest of the listing. Etsy accepts both; the second means you chose the crop instead of discovering it.

Etsy rules and details worth knowing

Dimensions are the easy part. These are the things a listing actually gets penalised for, inEtsy's own words wherever it has published them.

Where these numbers came from

Guides on this topic contradict each other, and several of the most-copied figures are simply wrong. So every claim here carries its provenance, split in two — because the pixel guidance and the hard limits genuinely do not come from the same quality of source.

Etsy does not publish this, so it is a conservative reading of secondary sources. We say so rather than implying precision we have not earned.

Where two credible sources disagree on a limit, we take the lower number: preparing 12 photos for a marketplace that accepts 20 costs you nothing, and preparing 20 for one that accepts 12 wastes work at the point of listing.

Common questions

What size should Etsy photos be?
At least 2000 pixels on both width and height — Etsy's own recommendation. Square at 2000 × 2000 survives Etsy's various crops best, and a 4:3 landscape version previews closest to the cropped thumbnail shoppers see in search. Going much beyond 2000px is counterproductive here, because of the file size limit.
Why does Etsy say 2000 pixels but also under 1 MB?
Because the two figures come from different concerns: the pixel target is about zoom quality on a product page, and the size limit is about Etsy's own delivery performance. Together they leave you roughly 250 KB per megapixel, which is a real squeeze on a photograph — around a 11th of what eBay allows at its recommended size. It is met by choosing a JPEG quality rather than by exporting at 100%.
Is Etsy's 1 MB limit a hard rejection?
Etsy's wording is that images larger than 1 MB cause problems rather than that they are rejected outright, and that is how this site reports it — the pixel guidance is Etsy's own, our reading of the limits leans conservative. Treat 1 MB as the number to come in under, aim just below it rather than far below it, and you never have to find out which kind of limit it is.
What is the 635 pixel rule on Etsy?
Your first listing photo must be at least 635px on width and height, or Etsy says the listing shows up lower in search. That is a ranking penalty rather than a rejection, which makes it more dangerous than a hard limit — nothing tells you it happened. Any photo prepared for the 2000px recommendation clears it several times over.
How many photos can an Etsy listing have?
10, plus one video. Use all of them: more photos measurably helps both conversion and search placement on Etsy, and handmade and vintage buyers in particular go looking for material, construction and scale before they buy.
Should I compress Etsy photos hard to be safe?
No — this is the one marketplace where over-compressing costs you sales. Etsy buyers zoom into weave, grain, glaze and joinery, and that texture is the first thing a JPEG discards when squeezed. Aim just under 1 MB rather than far below it, and resize to 2000px rather than uploading larger, because pixels you do not need are the cheapest bytes to give up.
Why does Etsy crop my photo in search results?
Etsy's search thumbnails are landscape, and your first image is what gets used there. A square upload has its top and bottom trimmed for that view — harmless if the subject is centred, and quietly ruinous if the important part sits near an edge. The 4:3 preset exists so you can see the crop before Etsy applies it.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere when I use these tools?
No. Resizing and compressing both happen inside this browser tab on your own device, with no account and no server. It is also why a batch of ten large photos is fine — nothing is queueing behind anyone else.
